Ah, sono nata e cresciuta nelle Hawaii, ma ora vivo a San Diego, in California. Sono sempre stata interessata alla scrittura e be', ho scritto storie sin da quando ero molto giovane. Faccio anche la graphic design.
Ah, I was born and raised in Hawai’i but I now live in San Diego, California. I’ve always been interested in writing and well, have written stories since I was very young. I also do graphic design.

I’d like to talk about the Cole McGinnis Mysteries series. What was your inspiration for this series?
Oh, c'è così tanta ispirazione. Uno dei miei studi più importanti è stato quello di esplorare le differenze delle strutture sociali e delle norme culturali tra orientali e occidentali. Volevo scrivere di un uomo americano che si scopre improvvisamente attratto da un uomo la cui cultura è molto diversa dalla sua: una cultura che non "permette" a un uomo di essere innamorato di un altro uomo e di come questo possa influire sul loro rapporto.
Oh, so much inspiration. One of my major studies has been the exploration of the differences between the Eastern and Western social structures and cultural norms. I wanted to write about an American man who suddenly finds himself attracted a man whose culture is very different from his own—a culture that does not “allow” a man to be in love with another man and how it would affect their relationship.
Che tipo di ricerca hai svolto e quanto a lungo hai studiato prima di iniziare la serie Un'indagine di Cole McGinnis?
What kind of research did you do and how long have you spent studying before beginning the Cole McGinnis Mysteries series?
Beh, diciamo che ho, più o meno, barato perché sono asiatica, quindi è stato più facile scrivere di Jae che di Cole. Well, I sort of cheated because I am Asian so it was easier to write Jae than Cole. Cole’s life experiences and his culture are foreign to me so it was a matter of writing, asking friends for their opinion and delving into what is considered a baseline American culture. Growing up in Hawai’i, much of our culture is influenced by the Pacific Rim cultures so it was a learning experience for me to write a “standard” American from Chicago. Cole was a lot of fun and a lot of what he says comes from actual conversations I’ve had with friends.

I think it’s fascinating that a damaged, complex, multi-faceted character like Cole could evolve over time from Dirty Kiss! How did you find Cole and his story?
Volevo scrivere di un uomo che aveva dei demoni personali da sconfiggere, ma anche di uno che avrebbe lottato per capire i bisogni e le motivazioni di qualcun altro. Cole è un cavaliere bianco, un paladino, un uomo che potrebbe andare incontro al pericolo e alle difficoltà perché qualcuno ha bisogno di aiuto. È disinteressato e un po' spericolato ma con un buon cuore. Il suo primo pensiero è per gli altri, a volte a rischio della sua salute e del suo benessere.
La chiave per costruire il personaggio di Cole era quella di descrivere le sue convinzioni e le sue conoscenze personali. Dal momento che è in prima persona e non ha in realtà nessuna conoscenza approfondita di qualsiasi cultura asiatica (diversamente da me), ho dovuto scrivere su di lui che imparava andando avanti. La cosa più difficile su Cole è scrivere senza questa conoscenza e dovere spiegare le cose di cui io invece sono a conoscenza fin da quando sono nata.
È stato bello uscire dalla mia prospettiva ed entrare in quella di Cole. Ho dovuto fare molto affidamento sui miei amici e ho fatto molte domande su come si sentivano quando hanno visto cose come i gamberi con le loro teste intatte o altre cose con cui sono cresciuta. È stato fondamentale per Cole sperimentare queste cose e avere quelle che avrei considerato normali reazioni culturali a queste differenze.
I wanted to write about a man who had personal demons of his own to conquer as well as one who would struggle to understand someone else’s needs and motivations. He’s a white knight, a paladin, a man who would run towards danger and trouble because someone needs help. He’s selfless and a little reckless but with a good heart. His first thought is of others, sometimes at risk to his own health and well-being.
The key to writing Cole was depicting his personal beliefs and knowledge. Since it is first-person and he really has no in-depth knowledge of any Asian culture (very opposite of me), I had to write him learning as he went along. The hardest thing about Cole is writing without that knowledge and I needed to explain things I’ve known since I was born.
It was good to get out of my own perspective and into Cole’s. I depended a lot on my friends and asked a lot of questions about how they felt when they encountered things like shrimps with their heads intact or other things I’ve grown up with. It was key for Cole to experience these things and have what I’d consider normal cultural reactions to these differences.

Jae-Min is beautiful and a mysterious young man-I really love him-How did you create the character of Jae? And what was the greatest challenge in creating him?
Creare Jae-Min è stato davvero facile perché ho conosciuto tanti uomini asiatici che sono intrappolati o sono stati intrappolati nella sua stessa situazione. Ci hanno insegnato che non viviamo per noi stessi ma per la generazione prima e dopo di noi. La famiglia è il centro, ciò che ci guida è il suo perpetuarsi e il continuo successo piuttosto che i nostri desideri o sogni personali.
È difficile prendersi una pausa da tutto questo e volevo raffigurare un uomo asiatico medio che vive una crisi di fede culturale. Jae-Min actually was very easy because I’ve known so many Asian men who are caught or have been caught in his situation. We are taught we do not live for ourselves but for the generation before and after us. The family is the focus, its perpetuity and continued success are what drives us rather than our own personal wishes or dreams.
It’s a hard to break from that and I wanted to depict an average Asian man undergoing a crisis of cultural faith. I needed to show that neither Cole or Jae were wrong in what they believed, simply that they are driven by two very different mindsets formed by the cultures they were raised in.

One of the biggest relationships in the Cole McGinnis Mysteries series is the friendship between Cole and Bobby. What message do you hope this series sends about friendship?
Ah, Bobby. Bobby è un fratello surrogato per Cole, qualcuno che è apparso in un momento in cui Cole era separato dal suo vero fratello, Mike. Bobby è stato creato per concedere delle pause a Cole, che ha davvero un'anima alla Don Chisciotte, ma la loro amicizia li motiva. Possono litigare e discutere, ma quando tutto è detto e fatto, saranno sempre lì l'uno per l'altro... anche andando avanti nella serie, quando Bobby oltrepassa un certo limite e Cole non riesce a credere che lo abbia veramente fatto. Ah, Bobby. Bobby is a surrogate brother for Cole, someone who appeared at a time when Cole was estranged from his real brother, Mike. Bobby was created to put some breaks on Cole who really does have a Don Quixote soul but their friendship grounds them. They can bicker and argue but when it’s all said and done, they will always be there for one another… even later in the series when Bobby crosses a line Cole cannot believe he crossed. It works out. :D

Let’s talk about some of the themes that recur in your work. The Cole McGinnis Mysteries series has so many layers — family, love, friendship, second chances, a variety of cultures, and also characters striving to define themselves amidst a restrictive and traditional society, coming out, homophobia. What is your thought process in deciding how to approach these themes?
Oh, ho semplicemente scritto. Volevo un ambiente ricco di personaggi e anche descrivere la Los Angeles che conosco e amo. Non ci sono neri e bianchi nel mondo di Cole. Tutto è realtà ma forse un po' amplificata. Ho scritto Cole con l'intento di esplorare ciò che significa avere una famiglia con cui si potrebbe non avere un legame di sangue ma che ha formato comunque le basi della tua vita.
Cole ha una famiglia molto ricca e variegata ed egli ama pienamente, con tutto il cuore. Volevo scrivere una serie in cui il lettore vedesse il mondo da quella prospettiva, dove il personaggio principale non è perfetto ma cerca, con grande impegno, di fare la cosa giusta. Non sempre avrà successo e gli errori che compie sono a volte molto grandi ma, alla fine, egli si preserverà . I problemi che affronta sono quelli comuni, le cose con cui tutti lottiamo e, soprattutto, volevo che si innamorasse ma che dovesse lavorare per questo.
Affrontare questi temi è stato molto facile. Era più importante assicurarmi di non fare la predica al lettore, di bilanciare la prospettiva di tutti, così che fossero giuste le scelte dei personaggi, e spiegare perché qualcuno ha fatto ciò che ha fatto. La serie è un'esplorazione della cultura, dell'amore e delle decisioni di vita vista attraverso gli occhi di un uomo molto americano.
Oh, I just wrote. I wanted a rich environment of characters and also to depict the Los Angeles I know and love. There are no blacks and whites in Cole’s world. Everything is reality but perhaps amped up a bit. I wrote Cole with the intent of exploring what it meant to have a family you might not be blood-related to but still formed the foundation of your life.
Cole has a very rich, diverse family and he loves fully, with his whole heart. I wanted to write a series where the reader saw the world from that kind of perspective, where the main character isn’t perfect but he tries very hard to do the right thing. He will not always succeed and the mistakes he makes are sometimes very big but in the end, he will preserve. The problems he faces are common ones, things we all struggle with and most of all, I wanted him to fall in love but have to work for it.
Approaching the themes was very easy. It was more of a matter to make sure I didn’t preach to the reader, to balance out everyone’s perspective so it was fair to the characters’ choices and to explain why someone did what they did. The series is an exploration of culture, love and life decisions as seen through the eyes of a man who is very American.

How was writing Dirty Secret different from writing Dirty Kiss?
Cole è molto facile da scrivere una volta che mi lascio prendere dalla sua voce ma oh, trovare la storia da raccontare è difficile. Anche modellare Jae-Min all'interno della sua vita è difficile a causa di quell'equilibrio che devo raggiungere. Ora devo tornare indietro e vedere di cosa parla "Sporchi Segreti", perché l'intera serie per me si mescola in una lunga storia nella mia testa.
Ah, le chaebol! Eh. Oh, mi sono divertita con quelle. La Corea del Sud è dominata da questi clan e da queste famiglie d'affari e ho voluto includerle un po' in questo libro, perché sono una parte davvero essenziale della struttura sociale. Cole is very easy to write once I get into his voice but oh, finding the story to tell is difficult. Folding Jae-Min into his life is also hard because of that balance I have to achieve. Now I have to go back and see what Dirty Secret is about because the whole series blends into one long story for me in my head.
Ah, the chaebols! Heh. Oh, I had fun with that. South Korea is dominated by these clans and corporate families and I wanted to include a bit of that into this book because they are such a vital part of how the society is structured. Dirty Secret is the book I delved deeper into the Korean culture and how it shapes a gay man’s life. This truly was a battle between desires and duty.
It was different probably because I wove more of Jae’s world into Cole’s. And it was where they took their first steps into having a formal relationship.

The Cole McGinnis Mysteries series is in the mystery/suspense genre. What attracted you to this genre?
Ah, amo scrivere di misteri e di suspense. Amo i loro puzzle. Inoltre, adoro scrivere sulle città in cui li ambiento poiché così tanto della vita in California riguarda la città in cui sei. Qui abbiamo un vasto panorama di culture e di persone, è un grande scenario per un omicidio. Ho amato i gialli per lungo tempo. Mi rendono molto felice.
Ah, I love writing mysteries and suspense. I love the puzzles of it. I also adore writing about the cities I set them in because so much of living in California is about the city you are in. We have such a vast landscape of cultures and people here, it’s a great backdrop for a murder. I’ve loved murder mysteries for a long time. They make me very happy.

You write in so many genres: suspense, mystery, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, contemporary romance. Do you have a favorite or preferred genre in which you write?
Wow... vediamo... direi che il mystery e il genere urban fantasy sono i miei preferiti. Mi piace risolvere un omicidio, come i personaggi scoprono la verità e adoro creare mondi interi con regole proprie e società in un libro urban fantasy. Ogni genere ha le sue regole e le sue voci e mi piace esplorare il modo in cui scrivere in quelle tonalità .
Wow… let’s see… I’d say mystery and urban fantasy are my favourites. I like the working out of a murder and how the characters uncover the truth and I adore creating entire worlds with their own rules and societies in urban fantasy. Every genre has its own rules and voices and I love exploring how to write in those tones.

What's the best thing about writing? And the worst?
Quello su cui mi piace scrivere è la creazione delle personalità e del world building. Anche se sto usando una città reale, quel mondo deve essere dipinto per il lettore. What I love about writing is the creation of the personalities and the world building. Even if I am using a real city, that world has to be painted for the reader. A big part of Cole’s world IS Los Angeles and the reader has to be able to be there with him, understand where he is and what he is seeing. You should be able to fly to Los Angeles and find every single place you read about in one of Cole’s books. Same with the Sinners series and San Francisco. For my urban fantasies, I love stretching the worlds to the point of fantastical, beyond belief but still ground it in enough reality the reader can see these wonderful, odd and dangerous things could exist. That is the best part about writing—creating real people who might exist in a world the reader can clearly see and feel.
The worst? Sex scenes. Oh they are hard to write because they have to mean something, a delving into intimacy not only physical but also emotional. A sex scene has to add something to the narrative. There has to be a purpose. So working that in and making sure it doesn’t sound like anything else I’ve written before is difficult.

What have you learned about yourself as writer?
Che odio scrivere scene di sesso perché voglio che siano fresche e nuove ogni volta che ne scrivo una. C'è molta pressione.
That I hate writing sex scenes because I want them to be fresh and new each time I write one. There’s a lot of pressure.
In che modo la tua vita di lettrice influenza o caratterizza la tua vita di scrittrice?
How does your reading life influence or inform your writing life?
Ho letto qualsiasi cosa. È terribile. Niente è sicuro. Le parole sono come i diamanti. Amo la sensazione di una parola sulla mia lingua e nella mia mente. La lingua è probabilmente una delle cose migliori in assoluto e anche la più frustrante perché interi concetti possono essere spiegati con una sola parola in una lingua, ma ne servono quindici per ottenere lo stesso concetto in un'altra. Amo leggere la voce di un autore. Una voce distinta e interessante è una delle cose più incredibili che un autore può possedere.
I read everything. It’s horrible. Nothing is safe. Words are like diamonds. I love the feel of a word on my tongue and in my mind. Language is probably one of the best things ever and the most frustrating because entire concepts can be explained in a single word in one language but it takes fifteen to get that concept across in another. I love reading an author’s voice. A distinct and interesting voice is one of the most incredible things an author can possess.

By heart, what was the first experience in which you learned that language has got power?
Durante la mia crescita abbiamo vissuto sul lato opposto di O'ahu, dove l'unico canale televisivo che avevamo costantemente era in giapponese. Sono cresciuta con gli anime e i serial drama giapponesi, ma non riuscivo ancora a leggerlo. Importunerei la gente affinché traduca per me e potrei dire se mi si sta mentendo dalla quantità di parole pronunciate e dalla serie di sottotitoli paragonati a quanto riferitomi su ciò che i personaggi hanno detto. Watashitachi wa anata no uma o motte imasu NON significa ciao.
Ho imparato a leggere in età precoce e all'improvviso lo spettacolo dei ninja assassins che si mascherano da circo itinerante è diventato molto più chiaro. Ho anche scoperto che erano i ragazzi buoni: davvero deludente per la mia giovane, macabra me stessa-chi ha ucciso i malvagi come penitenza per i crimini commessi in precedenza.
Il mondo è letteralmente connesso tramite fili di suono e se voi ne tirate uno, vi si rivelano intere culture. E il passato! Oh dio, tutta la storia e i miti! Poi c'è il futuro, le possibilità di ciò che possiamo fare, vedere ed essere. La lingua altro non è che il modo in cui possiamo prendere i colori presenti nella nostra mente e dipingere mondi interi da far vedere a qualcun altro.
When I was growing up, we lived on the windward side of O’ahu where the only television station we got consistently was in Japanese. I grew up on Japanese serial dramas and anime but I couldn’t read yet. I’d pester people to translate for me and I could tell from the amount of words being spoken and the string of subtitles compared to what I was told they were saying, I was being lied to. Watashitachi wa anata no uma o motte imasu does NOT mean hello.
I learned how to read at a very early age and suddenly the show about ninja assassins masquerading as a traveling circus made so much more sense. I also discovered they were the good guys—very disappointing to my young, macabre self—who killed evil people as penance for the crimes they’d done earlier in life.
The world is literally connected through threads of sound and if you tug on one, entire cultures are revealed to you. And the past! Oh god, all the history and myths! Then there is the future, the possibilities of what we can do, see and be. Language is how we can take the colours in our mind and paint entire worlds for someone else to see.

What was your most rewarding experience as an author?
Ho così tanti momenti! Okay, devo dire che accade quando qualcuno scrive o posta su Facebook che è andato e ha provato qualcosa di nuovo, come mangiare cibo coreano perché lo ha letto nel libro e ha detto... voglio provarlo. Se alcune parole che ho messo insieme hanno aiutato qualcuno a fare un passo in avanti o lo hanno fatto sentire talmente a proprio agio da provare qualcosa che non ha mai fatto prima, allora ho raggiunto quello che mi ero prefissata di fare: aprire la porta del mondo a qualcuno che la attraversa per esplorarlo.
So many moments! Okay, I would have to say it is when someone writes or posts to Facebook that they’ve gone and tried something new like eating Korean food because they read about it in my book and said… I want to try that. If some words I’ve strung together helped someone take a step forward or feel they are comfortable enough to try something they have never done before, then I have achieved what I’ve set out to do—opening the world’s door for someone to step through and explore it.

Okay... basandomi su questi criteri... io direi Kai Gracen per quanto riguarda il mio libro, Gaet di "Courtship Rite" di Donald Kingsbury e Jason Mamoa.
Penso che tutti loro condividano un'abituale fiducia e un insieme di competenze tali che noi potremmo sopravvivere e prosperare. Sono cresciuta su un'isola, quindi sono abbastanza sicura che sarei stata bene.
Okay… based on that criteria… I would say Kai Gracen from my books, Gaet from the Courtship Rite by Donald Kingsbury and Jason Momoa.
I think all of them share a common confidence and skillset that we’d survive and thrive. I grew up on an island so I’m fairly sure I’d be okay.

What are you working now? What are your plans for the future?
Attualmente sto finendo il primo libro de 415 Ink, una serie su dei fratelli che hanno un negozio di tatuaggi. Ho un'uscita per il 18 settembre, ovvero Tramps and Thieves, il secondo volume della serie Murder and Mayhem. Dopo aver finito con questo, scriverò Sin and Tonic, il romanzo finale della serie Sinners.
I miei piani futuri includono non dormire, bere un sacco di caffè e raccogliere i peli del gatto dai miei vestiti. Vivo una vita molto semplice.
Currently I am finishing up the first book in 415 Ink, a series about brothers and the tattoo shop they own. I have a release coming on September 18th. That’s Tramps and Thieves which is the second book in the Murder and Mayhem series. After that is finished, I will be writing the final Sinners novel, Sin and Tonic.
My future plans include not sleeping, drinking a lot of coffee and picking cat hair off of my clothes. I live a very simple life.

What's the best thing about writing? And the worst?
Quello su cui mi piace scrivere è la creazione delle personalità e del world building. Anche se sto usando una città reale, quel mondo deve essere dipinto per il lettore. Una grande parte del mondo di Cole È Los Angeles e il lettore deve essere in grado di essere lì con lui, capire dove si trova e cosa sta vedendo. Dovresti essere in grado di volare a Los Angeles e di trovare ogni singolo posto di cui hai letto in uno dei libri di Cole. Lo stesso vale per la serie Sinners e la città di San Francisco. Per i miei urban fantasy, amo allargare i mondi fino a un punto fantastico, al di là di ogni immaginazione, ma ancora fondati sufficientemente sulla realtà così che il lettore possa pensare che queste cose meravigliose, strane e pericolose potrebbero esistere. Il peggiore? Le scene di sesso. Oh sono difficili da scrivere perché devono significare qualcosa, un approfondimento dell'intimità non solo fisica ma anche emotiva. Una scena di sesso deve aggiungere qualcosa alla narrazione. Ci deve essere uno scopo. Così, lavorarci su e assicurarmi che non suoni come qualcosa che ho già scritto prima è difficile.
What I love about writing is the creation of the personalities and the world building. Even if I am using a real city, that world has to be painted for the reader. A big part of Cole’s world IS Los Angeles and the reader has to be able to be there with him, understand where he is and what he is seeing. You should be able to fly to Los Angeles and find every single place you read about in one of Cole’s books. Same with the Sinners series and San Francisco. For my urban fantasies, I love stretching the worlds to the point of fantastical, beyond belief but still ground it in enough reality the reader can see these wonderful, odd and dangerous things could exist. That is the best part about writing—creating real people who might exist in a world the reader can clearly see and feel.
The worst? Sex scenes. Oh they are hard to write because they have to mean something, a delving into intimacy not only physical but also emotional. A sex scene has to add something to the narrative. There has to be a purpose. So working that in and making sure it doesn’t sound like anything else I’ve written before is difficult.

Che odio scrivere scene di sesso perché voglio che siano fresche e nuove ogni volta che ne scrivo una. C'è molta pressione.
That I hate writing sex scenes because I want them to be fresh and new each time I write one. There’s a lot of pressure.
How does your reading life influence or inform your writing life?
Ho letto qualsiasi cosa. È terribile. Niente è sicuro. Le parole sono come i diamanti. Amo la sensazione di una parola sulla mia lingua e nella mia mente. La lingua è probabilmente una delle cose migliori in assoluto e anche la più frustrante perché interi concetti possono essere spiegati con una sola parola in una lingua, ma ne servono quindici per ottenere lo stesso concetto in un'altra. Amo leggere la voce di un autore. Una voce distinta e interessante è una delle cose più incredibili che un autore può possedere.
I read everything. It’s horrible. Nothing is safe. Words are like diamonds. I love the feel of a word on my tongue and in my mind. Language is probably one of the best things ever and the most frustrating because entire concepts can be explained in a single word in one language but it takes fifteen to get that concept across in another. I love reading an author’s voice. A distinct and interesting voice is one of the most incredible things an author can possess.

Durante la mia crescita abbiamo vissuto sul lato opposto di O'ahu, dove l'unico canale televisivo che avevamo costantemente era in giapponese. Sono cresciuta con gli anime e i serial drama giapponesi, ma non riuscivo ancora a leggerlo. Importunerei la gente affinché traduca per me e potrei dire se mi si sta mentendo dalla quantità di parole pronunciate e dalla serie di sottotitoli paragonati a quanto riferitomi su ciò che i personaggi hanno detto. Watashitachi wa anata no uma o motte imasu NON significa ciao.
Ho imparato a leggere in età precoce e all'improvviso lo spettacolo dei ninja assassins che si mascherano da circo itinerante è diventato molto più chiaro. Ho anche scoperto che erano i ragazzi buoni: davvero deludente per la mia giovane, macabra me stessa-chi ha ucciso i malvagi come penitenza per i crimini commessi in precedenza.
Il mondo è letteralmente connesso tramite fili di suono e se voi ne tirate uno, vi si rivelano intere culture. E il passato! Oh dio, tutta la storia e i miti! Poi c'è il futuro, le possibilità di ciò che possiamo fare, vedere ed essere. La lingua altro non è che il modo in cui possiamo prendere i colori presenti nella nostra mente e dipingere mondi interi da far vedere a qualcun altro.
When I was growing up, we lived on the windward side of O’ahu where the only television station we got consistently was in Japanese. I grew up on Japanese serial dramas and anime but I couldn’t read yet. I’d pester people to translate for me and I could tell from the amount of words being spoken and the string of subtitles compared to what I was told they were saying, I was being lied to. Watashitachi wa anata no uma o motte imasu does NOT mean hello.
I learned how to read at a very early age and suddenly the show about ninja assassins masquerading as a traveling circus made so much more sense. I also discovered they were the good guys—very disappointing to my young, macabre self—who killed evil people as penance for the crimes they’d done earlier in life.
The world is literally connected through threads of sound and if you tug on one, entire cultures are revealed to you. And the past! Oh god, all the history and myths! Then there is the future, the possibilities of what we can do, see and be. Language is how we can take the colours in our mind and paint entire worlds for someone else to see.

Ho così tanti momenti! Okay, devo dire che accade quando qualcuno scrive o posta su Facebook che è andato e ha provato qualcosa di nuovo, come mangiare cibo coreano perché lo ha letto nel libro e ha detto... voglio provarlo. Se alcune parole che ho messo insieme hanno aiutato qualcuno a fare un passo in avanti o lo hanno fatto sentire talmente a proprio agio da provare qualcosa che non ha mai fatto prima, allora ho raggiunto quello che mi ero prefissata di fare: aprire la porta del mondo a qualcuno che la attraversa per esplorarlo.
So many moments! Okay, I would have to say it is when someone writes or posts to Facebook that they’ve gone and tried something new like eating Korean food because they read about it in my book and said… I want to try that. If some words I’ve strung together helped someone take a step forward or feel they are comfortable enough to try something they have never done before, then I have achieved what I’ve set out to do—opening the world’s door for someone to step through and explore it.
