Rick è uno scrittore profondo e generoso: non ha esitato a raccontarci un po' di sé e del suo istintivo amore per la scrittura svelandoci alcuni suggestivi retroscena del suo ultimo romanzo. "Un cielo pieno di misteri", infatti, va oltre la storia narrata ed esplora i sogni, il senso della quotidianità e il grande mistero che è la vita.
Non mi resta che ringraziare di cuore Rick per avere gentilmente accettato di passare un po' di tempo con noi e per averci raccontato un po' della sua vita e delle sue esperienze di scrittore.

Can you tell us something about your background?
In primo luogo, le cose basilari. Sono nato in Ohio, a East Liverpool, una piccola città ubicata lungo il fiume Ohio. Sono cresciuto con i miei genitori e due sorelle sulle rive del fiume, 45 minuti a ovest di Pittsburgh. First, the basics. I was born and reared in the small Ohio River town of East Liverpool, OH. I grew up with my parents and two sisters on the banks of the Ohio, 45 minutes west of Pittsburgh. My hometown is known for its pottery production and has been featured in the books, Mute Witness, Dead End Street, and Big Love. I attended Miami University in Oxford, OH and got degrees in both English (with Creative Writing emphasis) and Mass Communications. After graduating from college, I moved to Chicago, where I lived most of my adult life. Most of my books have been set in Chicago--the place was very inspirational for me and still is. During my time in Chicago, I married and divorced. That union produced a son, Nicholas, who is now happily living in Montreal, Quebec with his husband, Tarik. I have also lived in Tampa, FL and Miami, FL.
Currently, I live in Palm Springs, CA with my husband, Bruce and our dog, a Boston Terrier named Lily.
In what little spare time I have, my passion for stories continues with a deep and abiding interest in reading (I am never not reading a book, and my favorite authors include Flannery O'Connor, James Purdy, Patricia Highsmith, Stephen King, and Ruth Rendell). I also love stories told in the media of movies and theater. I was a theater critic for nine years with the Chicago weekly, Windy City Times.
Writing has always been the way I've made my living, and when not writing suspenseful, twisted tales, I plied my craft as an advertising copywriter for associations, catalogs, and ad agencies.
My other passions include food, cooking, running, and travel.
Come sei arrivato alla scrittura e cosa ti ha spinto a scrivere il tuo primo libro?
What inspired you to write? What made you write your first book?
Il mio amore per la scrittura è iniziato insieme alla passione per le storie quando avevo, probabilmente, quattro anni. My love for writing began with a passion for stories that began when I was probably about four years old. I wrote my first short story when I was about six years old, first play in fourth grade, and I kept my fifth-grade classmates enthralled by reading aloud to them a serial novella I wrote about a young girl's kidnapping.
My first publication came in 1991 with Obsessed in Dell's lauded horror line, Abyss. Penance quickly followed. Since then, I have been writing what I cared most about: gay themed romance and sometimes, romance with a dark twist. To date, I have more than forty books in print, with digital-only shorts and novellas doubling that number.

Chaser is the first book in the Chaser Series. What’s this series all about and what inspired you to write it?

Chaser, and the book that followed it, Raining Men, have the same central core message—they’re all about loving yourself and that real beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. I wanted to explore these messages in both books by presenting very real gay men in contemporary situations very common and recognizable to 21st-century gay men.

I'd like to talk about Bobby, because every story with a hero needs a villain. What made you decide to tell Bobby’s back-story?
Bobby mi ha chiamato. Quando ho scritto "Cacciatore", tutti lo odiavano (come avevo previsto), ma sapevo questo di lui: era ferito e spezzato e questo mi ha aiutato a capirlo meglio, mi ha reso solidale con lui nonostante i suoi difetti piuttosto grandi. Volevo vedere se sarei stato in grado di scrivere un libro in cui prendevo il mio personaggio più antipatico e lo rendevo forse amabile tanto che il lettore avrebbe davvero fatto il tifo per lui. Penso di esserci riuscito! In "Raining Men" Bobby impara ad amare finalmente se stesso, e questo ha fatto la differenza in lui quando trova il suo vero amore. Bobby called to me. When I wrote Chaser, everyone hated him (as I intended), but I know this about Bobby—that he was wounded and broken and that made me understand him better, made me sympathetic to him despite his rather large shortcomings. I wanted to see if I could write a book, where I took my most unlikable character, and make him perhaps lovable and that the reader would actually root for him. I think I succeeded! Bobby learns, in Raining Men, to finally love himself, and that made the difference in him finding his own true love. I think his journey from darkness into light resonates with a lot of us.

What was the hardest part to write in Raining Men?
Rendere simpatico Bobby! Making Bobby likable! I think I did that in two ways—by showing his backstory and life growing up, which explained a lot about his behaviour and his first love, a little orphaned dog he finds in an alley. The dog allowed him to see his softer side—and that he was capable of selfless love and caring.

How much of your stories are based on some sort of facts?

The series is set in Chicago and is very realistic, I think, in its sense of place. I lived in Chicago for more than twenty years, so I know the city very well. And the city, I think, comes across as its own character, due to my second-nature knowledge of it.

Tell us a little about Sky Full of Mysteries, which will be released on 14th August 2018.
Penso che ogni buona storia cominci con una domanda molto semplice, e questa domanda inizia sempre con queste due parole: "E se...?" Nel caso di "Un cielo pieno di misteri", mi sono chiesto: "E se avessi una seconda possibilità di amare la persona di cui ti sei innamorato per la prima volta? E se potessi avere di nuovo tutta quella antica passione? E se quella persona tornasse dopo un periodo di vent'anni, quando credevi ormai di averla perduta per sempre?" Se da un lato può essere un romance, una storia di fantascienza, o semplicemente un misterioso racconto sull'amore e sulla perdita, dall'altro "Un cielo pieno di misteri" è iniziato proprio con quelle domande. I think every good story begins with a very simple question and it always starts with these two words: What if? In the case of SKY FULL OF MYSTERIES, I asked myself, "What if you had a second chance at love with the person you first fell in love with? What if you could have all that early passion again? What if it came after a period of twenty years, when you believed that person was lost to you forever?" SKY FULL OF MYSTERIES, while it may be a romance, a science fiction story, or simply a mysterious tale about love and loss, started with those very questions. In the story, about two young lovers who are separated when one disappears from the face of the earth, quite literally, I get the chance to explore the two kinds of love most of us will experience in our lifetime--the bliss of crazy, passionate, youthful first love and the contented, familial, sense-of-home love that comes with any good long term relationship. I wondered if we had the chance to choose between the two, which would we choose? That's the question at the heart of my story.. .and if you want to know how I answered it, you'll have to read the story. And it may cause you to wonder--which one would you choose, if you could?

In questo momento sto finendo un libro intitolato "Torn" ed è una storia semi-autobiografica sull'essere "divisi tra due amanti" (ricordate la vecchia canzone di Mary MacGregor?). Inizia nel 1995 con il personaggio principale, Ricky Comparetto, che compie il suo primo viaggio oltreoceano con il suo migliore amico, Boutros BinBin (che è venuto in America da Bath). Il viaggio è illuminante, espande la mente e culmina con Ricky che incontra un nuovo amore per le strade della città balneare di Brighton. Il fatto che il nuovo amore porti il curioso nome di Walt Whitman e sia anche americano, come lo è Ricky, non fa altro che rendere l'uomo sexy ancora più intrigante. Quando Walt e Ricky devono separarsi, la promessa è quella di rincontrarsi a Boston, la città da cui proviene Walt.
Ricky ritorna a Chicago e quasi subito conosce un altro uomo di cui si innamora. Tom Green è un sexy stallone colletto blu con il cuore più gentile che Ricky abbia mai incontrato.

Right now, I'm just finishing up a book called TORN and it's a semi-autobiographical story about being "torn between two lovers" (remember the old Mary MacGregor song?). It begins in 1995 with the main character, Ricky Comparetto, making his very first trip across the pond with his best friend, Boutros BinBin (who came to America from Bath). The trip is eye-opening, mind-expanding, and culminates in Ricky meeting a new love on the streets of the beach city of Brighton. The fact that the new love has the curious name of Walt Whitman and is also an American, like Ricky, only serve to make the sexy man more intriguing. By the time Walt and Ricky must part, promises have been made for a reunion in Boston, where Walt is from.
Ricky returns to Chicago and almost immediately finds another man with whom he falls in love. Tom Green is a sexy blue-collar beast with the kindest heart Ricky has ever run across.
What's he to do? With a visit to the east coast on the horizon and a new love blossoming in Ricky's home of Chicago, Ricky truly is 'torn between two lovers.'
Which one will he pick? Both? Neither? The answer won't reveal itself until the very final pages.

Quando ho scritto "Cacciatore", tutti lo odiavano (come avevo previsto), ma sapevo questo di lui: era ferito e spezzato e questo mi ha aiutato a capirlo meglio, mi ha reso solidale con lui nonostante i suoi difetti piuttosto grandi. Volevo vedere se sarei stato in grado di scrivere un libro in cui prendevo il mio personaggio più antipatico e lo rendevo forse amabile tanto che il lettore avrebbe davvero fatto il tifo per lui. Penso di esserci riuscito! In "Raining Men" Bobby impara ad amare finalmente se stesso, e questo ha fatto la differenza in lui quando trova il suo vero amore. Penso che il suo viaggio dall'oscurità alla luce entri in risonanza con molti di noi.
Bobby called to me. When I wrote Chaser, everyone hated him (as I intended), but I know this about Bobby—that he was wounded and broken and that made me understand him better, made me sympathetic to him despite his rather large shortcomings. I wanted to see if I could write a book, where I took my most unlikable character, and make him perhaps lovable and that the reader would actually root for him. I think I succeeded! Bobby learns, in Raining Men, to finally love himself, and that made the difference in him finding his own true love. I think his journey from darkness into light resonates with a lot of us.
What was the hardest part to write in Raining Men?
Rendere simpatico Bobby! Making Bobby likable! I think I did that in two ways—by showing his backstory and life growing up, which explained a lot about his behaviour and his first love, a little orphaned dog he finds in an alley. The dog allowed him to see his softer side—and that he was capable of selfless love and caring.

The series is set in Chicago and is very realistic, I think, in its sense of place. I lived in Chicago for more than twenty years, so I know the city very well. And the city, I think, comes across as its own character, due to my second-nature knowledge of it.
Tell us a little about Sky Full of Mysteries, which will be released on 14th August 2018.
Penso che ogni buona storia cominci con una domanda molto semplice, e questa domanda inizia sempre con queste due parole: "E se...?" I think every good story begins with a very simple question and it always starts with these two words: What if? In the case of SKY FULL OF MYSTERIES, I asked myself, "What if you had a second chance at love with the person you first fell in love with? What if you could have all that early passion again? What if it came after a period of twenty years, when you believed that person was lost to you forever?" SKY FULL OF MYSTERIES, while it may be a romance, a science fiction story, or simply a mysterious tale about love and loss, started with those very questions. In the story, about two young lovers who are separated when one disappears from the face of the earth, quite literally, I get the chance to explore the two kinds of love most of us will experience in our lifetime--the bliss of crazy, passionate, youthful first love and the contented, familial, sense-of-home love that comes with any good long term relationship. I wondered if we had the chance to choose between the two, which would we choose? That's the question at the heart of my story.. .and if you want to know how I answered it, you'll have to read the story. And it may cause you to wonder--which one would you choose, if you could?
Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

In questo momento sto finendo un libro intitolato "Torn" ed è una storia semi-autobiografica sull'essere "divisi tra due amanti" (ricordate la vecchia canzone di Mary MacGregor?). Inizia nel 1995 con il personaggio principale, Ricky Comparetto, che compie il suo primo viaggio oltreoceano con il suo migliore amico, Boutros BinBin (che è venuto in America da Bath). Il viaggio è illuminante, espande la mente e culmina con Ricky che incontra un nuovo amore per le strade della città balneare di Brighton. Il fatto che il nuovo amore porti il curioso nome di Walt Whitman e sia anche americano, come lo è Ricky, non fa altro che rendere l'uomo sexy ancora più intrigante. Quando Walt e Ricky devono separarsi, la promessa è quella di rincontrarsi a Boston, la città da cui proviene Walt.
Ricky ritorna a Chicago e quasi subito conosce un altro uomo di cui si innamora. Tom Green è un sexy stallone colletto blu con il cuore più gentile che Ricky abbia mai incontrato.

Right now, I'm just finishing up a book called TORN and it's a semi-autobiographical story about being "torn between two lovers" (remember the old Mary MacGregor song?). It begins in 1995 with the main character, Ricky Comparetto, making his very first trip across the pond with his best friend, Boutros BinBin (who came to America from Bath). The trip is eye-opening, mind-expanding, and culminates in Ricky meeting a new love on the streets of the beach city of Brighton. The fact that the new love has the curious name of Walt Whitman and is also an American, like Ricky, only serve to make the sexy man more intriguing. By the time Walt and Ricky must part, promises have been made for a reunion in Boston, where Walt is from.
Ricky returns to Chicago and almost immediately finds another man with whom he falls in love. Tom Green is a sexy blue-collar beast with the kindest heart Ricky has ever run across.
What's he to do? With a visit to the east coast on the horizon and a new love blossoming in Ricky's home of Chicago, Ricky truly is 'torn between two lovers.'
Which one will he pick? Both? Neither? The answer won't reveal itself until the very final pages.
