Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?

I’ve been in the publishing industry in one form or another since 2001, but I started writing queer romance in 2011 with Hainted.

What it is that appeals to you about writing queer romance?

Most characters I have to spend time getting to know, but Whyborne came to me in a flash, and I knew I had to write about this nerdy wizard who was so desperately uncomfortable in his own skin. Everything else formed around him.

Whyborne’s character journey. At the beginning he’s afraid of caring about other people, especially romantically. He just wants to be left alone and not get involved with anything outside of the small life he’s built for himself. And by the end, he’s not only in love with Griffin, but willing to do whatever it takes to stand up against the forces of evil.

Percival is one of my favorite gay book characters. He is solitary, shy and slightly stammering, sweet and vulnerable, but he has also many admirable qualities that he often overlook or doesn't see because of self-doubt. Where did the inspiration for Percy come from? Can you talk about his development?

I love nerdy, awkward characters and jumped at the chance to write one myself. I always saw him as having a sort of quiet bravery, refusing to let his father and the world remake him into someone he isn’t. That core strength is what allows him to develop into a romantic hero, even when he’d rather stay home.

Which let me really draw out the sexual tension between them for the first half of the book, with Whyborne fighting against his own desires while Griffin is trying very hard to court him.

I wanted to have a main female character in a time when most museums wouldn’t hire a woman to head one of their departments, let alone go on field expeditions. A lot of her character was formed by that—she’d have to be determined and outspoken to get where she has. But that worked out perfectly, because she balances out Whyborne’s hesitation and uncertain. Superficially, the two friends have opposite character traits, so they have some very entertaining scenes together.

Christine is particularly suitabile for creating a well-shaped story, to me. Will there be more of her in the next books?

I spent a lot of time researching as much as I could, from the clothing to the weather of coastal Massachusetts. The most surprising thing was how difficult it was to find out whether or not Whyborne’s apartment would have a kitchen—you’d think that would be much simpler to find than it was!

While it’s true that in the old days some publishing houses had strict requirements, the only real requirement for the romance genre is the main couple (or more if we’re talking polyamory) end up happily in love and together. Which leaves almost infinite room for creativity to come into play!
